Former Ohio surgeon Hassan-James Abbas faces up to five years in prison after pleading no contest to force-feeding his pregnant girlfriend crushed abortion pills while she slept, ending their unborn child’s life against her will.[6][8]

Story Highlights

  • Abbas, a surgical resident, used his ex-wife’s identity to fraudulently obtain mifepristone and misoprostol abortion pills.[1][6]
  • He allegedly crushed the pills, pinned down his sleeping girlfriend on December 18, 2024, and shoved them into her mouth.[1][2][4]
  • The victim fought free, called 911, sought hospital care; pregnancy outcome remains unknown, but charges confirm harm.[2][4]
  • Abbas pleaded no contest to four felonies including unlawful distribution of abortion drugs and identity fraud.[1][6]
  • State Medical Board of Ohio suspended his license for conduct posing public harm.[1][2]

Relationship and Initial Deception

Hassan-James Abbas, a former surgical resident at the University of Toledo, began dating one of his patients in October 2024 after separating from his wife.[1][2] The woman informed Abbas in December 2024 that she was pregnant. Abbas suggested abortion, but she refused.[2][4] Days later, Abbas used his ex-wife’s name, birthdate, and driver’s license number to order one mifepristone pill and 12 misoprostol pills.[1][3] He then offered his girlfriend hot chocolate and tea, behavior prosecutors described as out of character.[1][3]

Violent Force-Feeding Incident

On December 18, 2024, Abbas invited the victim to his home. While she slept, Abbas crushed the abortion pills into powder.[1][2][4] He climbed on top of her, held her down against her will, and shoved the crushed pills into her mouth.[1][2][3][4][5] The woman freed herself and called 911. Abbas seized the phone and ended the call.[2][4][5] She fled to a hospital for care. Abbas then drove around, discarding remaining pills from his car window to evade investigators.[1][2][3]

Prosecutors charged Abbas with felonies including abduction, evidence tampering, disrupting public services, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, identity fraud, and deception to obtain a dangerous drug.[6] Abbas admitted to investigators he ordered the pills but claimed the victim agreed to take them.[7]

Plea Deal and Professional Consequences

On Wednesday in May 2026, Abbas pleaded no contest in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to four felony charges: disrupting public services, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, identity fraud, and deception to obtain a dangerous drug.[1][2][3][4][6] A no contest plea means Abbas did not admit guilt but acknowledged the prosecution’s facts as accurate for sentencing.[1][2][6] Prosecutors dropped abduction and evidence tampering charges in the plea agreement.[7] Abbas faces up to five years in prison at his June 2026 sentencing.[6][8]

The State Medical Board of Ohio suspended Abbas’s medical license in November 2025, citing clear and convincing evidence of wrongdoing that posed immediate danger to public health.[1][2][6] This action underscores the betrayal of trust by a doctor sworn to protect life, especially an unborn child, aligning with conservative values defending family and the innocent from such reproductive coercion.[8]
