Fetterman’s Explosive Charge Against DSA Candidates

Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania went on Fox News and said members of the Democratic Socialists of America are “deeply anti-Israel” and “deeply anti-America.” He based this on what he called recent social media writings from several candidates backed by the group. He argued these candidates are extremists, not real Democrats, and insisted they “should not be allowed to run” under the Democratic Party label even if they choose to run for office.

Fetterman’s comments did not come out of nowhere. They followed primary elections where DSA-backed candidates scored wins in New York and Maine. He described the party’s direction as an “orgy of socialism” and said it was “clearly anti-America, anti-Western Civilization.” In his view, these victories show a growing wing that wants to tear down core American institutions instead of fixing them. That language taps into a long-running fear among many voters that elites are reshaping the country without their consent.

Specific Allegations: Extremism, Communism, and Deleted Posts

Fetterman went beyond broad labels and aimed at concrete examples, though he often stopped short of full documentation. He said some DSA-backed winners had posted “crazy things,” including calls to “abolish prison, abolish the border, abolish ICE,” which he framed as proof they are “anti-America, anti Western civilization.” He also claimed “several of them, many of them are actually avowed communists” and suggested one had ties to a group that wanted to end Western civilization entirely.

In New York, Fetterman singled out far-left candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, accusing her of calling America a “disgrace,” writing “f–k Kamala Harris,” and joking online about wiping her hands on the American flag after forgetting napkins. He said she supports abolishing borders and prisons and called her “a deeply disturbed individual.” Reporting notes that some of these alleged posts have not been independently verified, but they match his broader claim that certain DSA activists treat the flag, national borders, and law enforcement with contempt rather than criticism.

Anti-Israel Stance and the Denver Controversy

Israel is at the center of Fetterman’s break with the party’s left. He is known as one of the Democrats most strongly supportive of Israel and says his “moral clarity” on that issue is a line he will not cross. In one Fox News segment, he attacked a Denver DSA congressional candidate for what he called a refusal to condemn antisemitism, presenting it as more proof that the group’s activism has drifted from justice into hatred. This fits his larger argument that growing contempt for Israel inside the party amounts to contempt for America itself.

Outside critics back up at least part of his concern. The American Jewish Committee notes that DSA shifted over time from a Zionist group to a “far-left” organization “openly hostile to Israel,” including formal support for boycotts. The Anti-Defamation League reports that DSA endorsed the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement against Israel in 2017. These positions are real and documented, but the step from “anti-Israel” to “anti-American” is Fetterman’s own framing, not a stated DSA policy.

What DSA Actually Says It Wants

Supporters of DSA argue Fetterman is smearing policy views as treason. They point to the group’s platform, which includes ideas like Medicare for All, free higher and early childhood education, a 32-hour work week, universal rent control, and a Green New Deal-style climate plan. These are strong left-wing goals, but they fit within long-standing debates about how to manage the economy, healthcare, and energy, not open calls to “end Western civilization.” Critics say branding all these ideas “anti-American” shuts down debate instead of answering it.

On Israel, DSA language is far more hard-edged. Outside analyses show the group now describes Israel as a “settler-colonial, apartheid” state and demands “Palestinian liberation,” including a broad “right of return” for refugees, a position pro-Israel organizations say would end Israel’s identity as a Jewish state. One 2025 resolution reportedly made public claims that “Israel has a right to self-defense” an expellable offense for members. That helps explain why Fetterman sees the group as crossing a moral line, even if supporters insist it is about human rights.

Party Identity, ‘Anti-Americanism,’ and Voter Frustration

Fetterman’s fight with DSA is also a fight over who owns the Democratic brand. He has posted on X that these candidates are “Anti-Israel. Anti-America. Anti-Western Civilization,” and asked why he seems to be “the only Democrat in the U.S. Senate” refusing to defend “self-identified communists.” He has said the “dirtbag left” should form its own party and run on all the things they have “had to delete on social media.” That message appeals to voters who feel the system hides what politicians really believe.

This clash fits a larger pattern on both the left and the right. For years, conservative authors and commentators have claimed the Democratic Party “hates America” or is tearing down founding principles through Marxist ideas. At the same time, progressive activists accuse “America First” conservatives of attacking democracy and targeting minorities. Research on political attitudes shows that when people believe the other side does not value core democratic traits, they become more willing to bend rules to help their own party. That makes every “anti-American” label more dangerous.
