Rubio Defends Immunity Ruling

(ConservativeJournal.org) – Florida Senator and potential Trump running mate Marco Rubio expressed his support for the Supreme Court ruling that granted significant immunity from prosecution to Trump and presidents in the future.

In an interview with a news outlet, he argued that the clarification was necessary, because he believes the court is used as a weapon against political opponents. He further emphasized that politicians should settle their differences via debates and policy, not through court filings.

When the interviewer said that the same Justice Department prosecuting Trump is also prosecuting New Jersey Democrat Robert Menendez, Rubio argued that these types of Democrats are only targeted by the court if they fail to fall in line.

Even though Trump has called for the Justice Department to be used as a weapon against his political opponents in the past, Rubio disputed that Trump had ever made such a request. Trump has publicly stated he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate President Biden if re-elected, has reposted social media calls for specific officials to be jailed, and has suggested televised military tribunals for former Representative Liz Cheney. Rubio also voted against convicting Trump during his impeachment trial in 2021.

Another issue Rubio dodged in the interview was about dealing with the Supreme Court’s decision. In the past, he has claimed that the courts should oversee holding past presidents accountable rather than Congress. Instead of addressing the question, Rubio reiterated his claim that the criminal cases against Trump were examples of Democratic weaponization of the government.

Regarding the Republican Party’s stance on abortion, Rubio, a staunch opponent of abortion, was questioned on whether the party should revise its platform to leave abortion laws to the states rather than Congress. This idea has upset some anti-abortion groups. Rubio believes the GOP platform should reflect whoever gets nominated and noted that a full-on federal abortion ban is not possible. Trump has echoed similar sentiments, avoiding direct answers on whether he would support nationwide abortion restrictions through federal action.
