Netanyahu Warns of Assassination Threats

(ConservativeJournal.org) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed law enforcement to take strict measures against incitement after the recent attempt on Donald Trump’s life. Netanyahu made his announcement during the weekly Cabinet meeting, highlighting the rising threats against him and other officials.

Netanyahu stated that threats of murder and violence against political figures and their families are not just criminal offenses but also direct threats to democracy. Despite the seriousness of the situation, he noted that little action had been taken to address it.

While the motive of Trump’s dead attacker remains unclear, Netanyahu linked it to a global increase in political violence. He mentioned that such violence was anticipated by many, drawing parallels between the attack on Trump and the protests that have targeted him over the past year and a half.

Netanyahu criticized Attorney General Gali Baharav Miara for not prosecuting those he accused of incitement. He played a video during the meeting, showing protest leaders making negative statements against Netanyahu, and argued that this behavior is what incites assassination attempts. These negative comments initially focused on his judicial reforms and later his handling of the Hamas attack on October 7 and the ongoing hostage crisis.

Some protestors in the video expressed a desire for Netanyahu’s execution, while others made harsh political statements, accusing him of harming Israel as much as its enemies. Netanyahu himself has used similar rhetoric throughout his career, even during the most recent election.

Netanyahu criticized the opposition for not speaking out against the threats directed at right-wing leaders, urging them to condemn such incitement. He claimed that murder and violence threats in Israel predominantly target the right, although figures from the left and center may also face harassment. He reminded the public of the assassination of left-wing leader Yitzhak Rabin by a right-wing gunman, an event that has haunted his political legacy. In the past, he was accused of not condemning the incitement against Rabin strongly enough.
