(ConservativeJournal.org) – Bob Newhart, the comedian known for his satirical humor and TV shows, has died at 94 years of age. Jerry Digney, his publicist, stated that Newhart died soon after a string of brief sicknesses. The announcement was made on Thursday, July 18.
For younger people, Newhart was best known for his roles as Papa Elf in the 2003 holiday movie “Elf” and as an actor on “The Big Bang Theory”. He also won an Emmy for his performance in Big Bang Theory.
Chuck Lorre, creator of “The Big Bang Theory”, shared memories of working with Newhart in a released statement. He said he was happy to call him a friend and that he has nothing but good memories of him.
Before his TV fame, Newhart was popular mostly for his comedy albums. Newhart’s comedy career began in 1960 with the release of “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” which topped the Billboard charts and won three Grammys. This success paved the way for his TV appearances and movie roles.
Born George Robert Newhart in Oak Park, Illinois, he had tried different jobs before comedy. After studying commerce at Loyola University and serving in the US Army, he briefly attended law school before flunking out. His comedic style was influential and opened doors for comedians like Steve Martin and Jerry Seinfeld.
During his career, Newhart made appearances as a guest on shows like “The Jack Paar Show” and “The Gary Moore Show.” In 1961, he made his film debut in the movie “Hell Is for Heroes”.
He was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for Humor in 2002 and entered the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1993. His debut album was added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in 2007.
Newhart’s wife, Ginny, passed away last year. He is survived by all of his children and over 10 grandchildren.
