(ConservativeJournal.org) – Former President Obama recently praised President Biden as a “patriot of the highest order” after news broke that Biden would not seek re-election. Obama did not specifically endorse Vice President Harris in his place for the election though, which has caused some worry for Democrats.
In a statement on Sunday, July 21, Obama gave words of praise about Biden’s presidency and their personal friendship. He said Joe Biden’s run was one of the best in history, and also called him a dear friend.
Obama expressed confidence in the Democratic Party’s ability to move forward, despite the uncertainty. He said he has faith because of his personal experience with the party and how long he has been a part of it.
He emphasized Biden’s vision of a united America and expects this vision to shine at the Democratic Convention. Obama also conveyed his and Michelle’s gratitude to Joe and Jill Biden for their leadership during challenging times.
Reflecting on Biden’s tough decision, Obama noted the difficulty Biden faced in choosing not to run. He said that President Biden’s decision must have been one of the hardest of his life but knows that he did it for the love of his country.
Obama highlighted Biden’s achievements, including pandemic response, job creation, lowering drug costs, climate investments, and supporting unions. He commended Biden’s international leadership, particularly in uniting NATO against Russian aggression in Ukraine.
He also praised Biden’s character, noting his empathy, resilience, and fundamental decency. Obama credited Biden with steering the country away from the chaos of Trump’s administration.
Obama believes he would have had a good chance during re-election if he stayed. He said that Biden understood the “risks” of another Trump victory and would have worked to prevent it.
Obama concluded by saying Biden had all the traits of a great president, and that he supports his decision to step down. No endorsement of any Democratic candidate, including Kamala Harris, was present in his statement.
