McConnell Booed At GOP Convention

(ConservativeJournal.org) – Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Senate Minority, was booed by the attendees at the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Monday, July 15. This happened while he was giving the results of the delegate votes from Kentucky.

Amid all the boos from the crowd, McConnell tried to announce that Kentucky delegates had selected Trump as the next president. However, his speech was nearly drowned out entirely from the noise of the crowd.

After he conceded Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 election, McConnell has not been well-liked in the GOP, although he had a good relationship with Trump during his presidency. Despite voting to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial, McConnell did harshly criticize him over the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. He argued that Trump was entirely responsible for the events of that day.

Trump has frequently criticized McConnell and also allegedly made racist remarks about his wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao. In February, Trump questioned whether he could work with McConnell if he was re-elected.

In recent months, however, McConnell has been moving towards reconciliation as Trump dominated the Republican primary races and most GOP figures aligned with him. McConnell endorsed Trump for president in March and the two men seemed to have buried the hatchet at a meeting in Capitol Hill last month after years of not speaking. Nevertheless, the reaction McConnell received on Monday shows that many Republicans have not forgotten his initial refusal to support Trump immediately after the 2020 election.

McConnell was once a powerful senator in the Senate, but his influence has decreased as Trump’s has increased. Earlier this year, Trump opposed a bipartisan border bill that McConnell had supported, leading McConnell to vote against it. Weeks later, the 82-year-old senator announced that he would step down as minority leader. Some have speculated this loss might be the reason why he stepped down.
