(ConservativeJournal.org) – Dozens of popular ice cream brands are being recalled due to potential contamination with bacteria just as summer was beginning to heat up. Totally Cool, a subsidiary of Owings Mills based out of Maryland, recalled all its brands of ice cream goods after a random sampling by the FDA found contamination. The bacteria in question is listeria monocytogenes, which can cause potentially fatal food poisoning.
The brands being recalled are: Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery, Friendly’s, Hershey’s Ice Cream, Jeni’s (ice cream sandwiches), Yelloh!, Cumberland Farms, ChipWich, The Frozen Farmer, AMAFruits, Dolcezza Gelato, Taharka, LaSalle. Totally Cool has paused production and shipping of their products until they can identify and ameliorate the source of the problem.
The FDA provided a list with all the relevant information if you happen to have one of the above brands in your freezer.
Listeria monocytogenes can result in listeriosis. The infection can be serious and potentially fatal for folks with weakened immune systems, the very young and very old. It can also whack normal healthy adults, causing symptoms like fever, headaches, body aches, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and IBS. Listeriosis can also result in stillbirths
and/or miscarriages in pregnant women, which is particularly disturbing.
The Centers for Disease Control estimate that 1,600 people get a nasty bout of listeriosis every year. Annually around 260 people die from the infection.
The FDA said that there haven’t been any reported infections associated with the bacteria yet and they’re continuing to help Totally Cool resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Anyone who purchased one of the brands above in the relevant time frame can return the product to wherever it was purchased for a full refund.
Another listeria problem was detected in Massachusetts at Chang and Son Enterprises, Inc. The company produces various sprouted vegetable products and listeria was detected in its facility, resulting in a recall of all the firm’s mung and soybean products.
