Telegram’s Move Towards Stricter Moderation
Telegram has allied with the U.K.-based Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) to combat child sexual abuse material. This collaboration grants Telegram access to IWF’s comprehensive datasets and technology, enabling an oversight previously missing from the app’s moderation efforts. The IWF’s renowned database and tools will allow Telegram to automatically detect, flag, and eradicate harmful content more efficiently.
This step represents a significant pivot for Telegram, which has faced widespread criticism for its previously lax stance on content moderation.
Pavel Durov, the company’s CEO, was arrested in France for failing to curb illegal activity, including CSAM, occurring on the app. Following his release on bail, Durov announced plans to bolster moderation efforts.
Aiming for Global Safety Standards
With the partnership, IWF gets the mandate to directly report CSAM instances to Telegram for expedited removal. The IWF will also furnish Telegram access to ‘hashes,’ tools to recognize and obstruct the sharing of such material. Derek Ray-Hill, interim CEO at IWF, described this junction as a “transformational first step” for Telegram, emphasizing the need for further commitment.
IWF’s role in monitoring and reporting will extend beyond just known abuse imagery. They’ll also work to identify non-photographic depictions and block links to CSAM-hosting sites, thus enhancing Telegram’s moderation capabilities.
