Kennedy, renowned for his anti-vaccine activism and a scion of the esteemed Kennedy political dynasty, has used YouTube to communicate his intentions. He has urged Americans to join him on October 9 in Philadelphia for a “major announcement.” In his video, he says a paradigm shift is coming to American politics and vehemently criticizes the pervading corruption within “both political parties.” He further questions the effectiveness of adhering to the existing norms. This clearly shows his opinion that it is time for change, something new.
Robert F Kennedy Jr. carries the legacy of being the nephew of the late President John F Kennedy, assassinated in 1963. He is the namesake of his father, former US Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who met a similar fate during his own presidential campaign.
Kennedy initially campaigned as a Democrat. He now contends that the Democratic Party has essentially fused with the Biden campaign, depriving him of a fair chance in the nomination race. Various opinion polls consistently underscored Biden’s substantial lead over Kennedy, with the latter consistently polling in the single digits or low double digits.
Kennedy’s choice to run as an independent has made some Democrats apprehensive. There are concerns that a third-party candidacy could divert votes away from Biden. These concerns are amplified against the backdrop of economic anxieties and questions surrounding Biden’s age, particularly as he prepares for an expected rematch against the 77-year-old Donald Trump, the leading contender for the Republican nomination.
Trump is also currently dealing with multiple legal proceedings, including allegations of seeking to overturn Biden’s 2020 election victory, which has costed Trump a lot of legal expenses for his campaign. This dynamic suggests that Kennedy’s decision could also impact Trump’s campaign.
