(ConservativeJournal.org) – The death of hockey player Adam Johnson after the blade of an ice skate sliced his neck during a match in the UK has prompted a police investigation. Johnson, 29, was an American on the Nottingham Panthers team playing against the Sheffield Steelers in a game for the Champions Cup when the tragic incident occurred. He later died at the hospital.
In a statement on social media, the Nottingham Panthers described Johnson’s death as a “freak accident”. South Yorkshire Police are now conducting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, urging the public to avoid speculation.
Johnson, originally from Minnesota, was in the NHL playing with the Pittsburgh Penguins for two years. The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Anaheim Ducks paid tribute to Johnson in an emotional show of solidarity. The Penguins added “AJ 47” designs on their headgear and honored Johnson before their game. Hockey organizations and players across the world offered their condolences.
Hockey manufacturer Bauer called for collective action within the sport to increase awareness and to mandate neck protection. They emphasized the importance of education on the use of protective gear and the necessity to collaborate with with governing bodies.
Currently, UK players are allowed to play without neck-guards after turning 18. The English Ice Hockey Association, responsible for governing the sport below the Elite League, responded to Johnson’s death by making neck guards mandatory for all on-ice activities starting in 2024. They also strongly recommended the immediate use of neck-guards. They cited anticipated supply issues as the reason for not implementing the mandate immediately. The EIHA also plans to conduct a thorough review of player safety equipment within the next 12 months.
Washington Capitals winger TJ Oshie, co-owner of Warroad Hockey equipment and clothing company, reported high demand for cut-resistant materials and a sold-out inventory following Johnson’s tragic accident. The priority, however, remains with Johnson’s family as the hockey community grieves the loss of a talented athlete and advocate for player safety.
