(ConservativeJournal.org) – Senator Bob Menendez has hired lawyer Abbe Lowell, who is currently Hunter Biden’s attorney, for his defense against the current bribery charges against him. Menendez is facing many calls to resign from other senators because of the indictments. He denies the accusations and says he intends to keep his position.
The indictment was revealed on Friday, September 22. It alleges that Menendez received over $400,000 in the form of gold bars, cash, and a Mercedes in exchange for providing favors to a New Jersey developer and people connected to the Egyptian government. Menendez vehemently denied these charges, branding them as “salacious” during an extraordinary press conference. However, he refrained from addressing the discovery of gold bars at his residence and remained non-committal regarding his re-election plans.
Menendez’s wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, who is also confronting indictment, and Abbe Lowell, were conspicuously absent from his side during the press conference. Menendez delivered his remarks at Hudson County Community College, a significant location where he embarked on his political journey as the mayor of Union City.
Support for the beleaguered Democrat appears to be eroding, with over two dozen New Jersey Democrats urging him to step down. Furthermore, Rep. Andy Kim, renowned for his cleanup efforts following the January 6 Capitol incident, has thrown his hat into the Senate race, setting the stage for a formidable primary challenge against Menendez.
Well known Democrats like New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman have called for Menendez to resign. According to them, because of the indictment and the controversy, his leadership as a senator can easily be called into question.
Menendez stepped down from his position as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Although he still does maintain that he is innocent. Cory Booker, the other New Jersey state senator, has not commented on the situation at all.
