Ford to Recall Millions of Explorer Vehicles

(ConservativeJournal.org) – Ford is recalling 2.24 million of its older Explorer SUVs due to a problem with trim retention clips failing to engage properly. The recall is worldwide, with 1.89 million of the vehicles being located within the U.S. The impacted models are from 2011 through 2019.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that the recall was happening because of a chance the trim could detach. Ford said they have no indication the problem has caused any accidents or injuries.

The solution is to replace A-pillar trim which is a metal support for the windshield. Ford modified their design such that the part wasn’t necessary after 2019.

Ford suggested that 5% of its vehicles on the roads are affected. Owners will know they have an issue if they detect wind or rattling coming from the windshield.

The problem was first detected in 2018 after an informal inquiry from NHTSA caused them to review the A-pillar trim parts on 2012, 2013, and 2014 Explorers. Ford’s review suggested there was minimal to no risk to safety due to the issue. The problem was reexamined in 2021, and again determined to be minor enough to not require a recall.

Then in February 2023 NHTSA began another review of the problem and Ford got another request for a review from Transport Canada. NHTSA suggested it was a safety hazard while Ford indicated they have had 14,337 warranty replacements associated with the A-trim parts. Owners can contact their local dealership.

The news comes as major brand retailer Costco has recall woes of its own. This month Costco and Beretta meats issued a recall for packages of sliced charcuterie style deli meats due to contamination with Salmonella bacteria. CDC expanded the recall to include “Busseto Foods Charcuterie Sampler” which is also sold at Sam’s Club. They also included “Fratelli Beretta Antipasto Gran Beretta” which is sold at Costco to the recall. Customers can discard the products and contact the store for a full refund.

CDC said 47 illnesses including ten hospitalizations were reported in 22 states across the nation. The packages should be discarded and any surfaces touched by meats should be disinfected or washed with soap and water.
