(ConservativeJournal.org) – Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) complained on April 16 that House Republicans were “bickering” over Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) willingness to advance foreign aid, warrantless surveillance, and extreme government spending. Kemp suggested that the House Republicans focus on “important issues” instead of threatening to remove the Speaker.
Kemp quoted Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) who added his voice to support the motion to vacate sponsored by Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
When asked about what was the final “straw that broke the camel’s back,” Massie indicated that “the camel has a pallet of bricks” at this point, adding that Johnson’s endorsement of FISA, foreign war funding, and outrageous spending were all major areas of concern.
Massie said that he was going to cosponsor the motion and suggested Johnson announce his resignation early so a new GOP speaker can be chosen without a gap in the office or chance for Democrats to take over control of the House.
It’s been suggested that some Republicans are so irate with the House Freedom Caucus and conservative Republicans that they could vote with Democrats to install Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) as Speaker and give Democrats control of both chambers.
The move to oust Johnson follows a weekend joint appearance by Johnson with Donald Trump at Mar-A-Lago where the pair announced election integrity initiatives. Trump said that being the Speaker isn’t an easy job. He also added that he believed Johnson was “doing a very good job,” insisting that his ability to advance conservatism is limited by circumstances.
Commenters responding to Kemp’s sentiments were quick to point out he helped Biden secure his 2020 win. Some called both men Democrats in practice. One suggested that Johnson and Kemp were both “American last,” which is the opposite of the MAGA movement which trumpets “America First” as a campaign slogan.
One man said that “Never Trumper RINO Brian Kemp supports Speaker Johnson” which is why he supports the motion to vacate.
