(ConservativeJournal.org) – The former chair for President Trump’s campaign in 2016, Paul Manafort, might soon rejoin Trump’s 2024 team.
Manafort’s potential involvement in the convention has been rumored for the last few months. He was pardoned by Trump in 2020 after being convicted on charges of bank fraud and tax evasion in 2018.
News outlets with sources close to the campaign revealed that Trump has been considering bringing Manafort on board as an advisor for a while now. This news comes with the official confirmation that the Republican National Convention will take place in July. Trump is currently looking to fill campaign roles specifically for this event.
Discussions about what Manafort’s role in the campaign will entail have included considerations for his involvement in fundraising and participation in the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. While no final decision has yet been reached, sources indicated that Manafort will still most likely be hired. Outlets have reached out to Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee for comment on these reports.
Manafort previously served as Trump’s campaign chair from March to August 2016. He faced legal troubles related to bank fraud and tax charges as part of Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. In 2020, Manafort was placed under quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic before receiving a pardon from Trump right before he left the White House. He also wrote a book called “Political Prisoner.” According to him, the book challenges the allegations from the investigation and reaffirms his support for Trump.
Trump, while facing many controversies and criminal charges, is lining up to be the Republican front-runner for 2024, and so any picks that he makes for members of his camp are bound to be scrutinized by both the Democrats and the media. He has not yet made a formal choice regarding his running mate for the vice presidency.
