(ConservativeJournal.org) – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came out swinging during his one-on-one GOP primary debate against former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. In his opening remarks, DeSantis suggested Haley was telling audiences what they wanted to hear. He called Haley “mealy-mouthed” before suggesting she would obey her donors before the will of the people.
The debate occurred on CNN on Wednesday evening, January 10th. DeSantis also drew attention to the fact that Haley thanked former Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for the inspiration to run for political office. He used the mention to suggest that Haley would “look down on middle America.” Clinton famously referred to Trump’s supporters as “deplorables.”
DeSantis said that he debated California Gov. Gavin Newsome (D) who he thought “lied a lot,” while suggesting Haley gave Newsome “a run for his money” in that regard.
Haley responded by mentioning the website “DeSantisLies.com,” and suggested that criticism against her immigration policies was in bad faith. She added that a wall isn’t a sufficient solution, without elaborating on what “everything else” meant to her. Democrats have famously blamed the GOP for a lack of “immigration reform” which they blame as the cause of the current crisis at the southern border.
DeSantis pointed out that Haley has foreign policy positions in common with the Democrats, including how they feel about the Ukrainian war. Haley is a supporter of ongoing and seemingly endless support for Ukraine while most of the Republican party has had enough. DeSantis suggested Haley cared more about Ukraine’s border than America’s.
Former Gov. Chris Christie dropped out abruptly on Wednesday after previously making comments that suggested he was going to stay in the primary for at least the first two state contests.
Trump made comments regarding Christie’s departure during his town hall-style discussion which was ongoing at the same time as the DeSantis/Haley debate. Trump said that he might even start to like Christie again after Christie was caught on a hot-mic suggesting Haley was going to lose the primary and wasn’t capable of competing at this level.
