(ConservativeJournal.org) – Secretary of State Antony Blinken has acknowledged Iran’s involvement in a recent attack carried out by Yemen-based Houthi rebels, which targeted US interests in the Red Sea. Blinken, speaking at Bahrain International Airport after talks with Bahrain King Hamad Al Khalifa, asserted that the attack, which used unmanned aerial vehicles, mostly drones armed with missiles, was supported by Iran, who provided equipment, technology, intelligence, and information. He emphasized that over 20 countries have been informed that continued attacks, like the recent one, will have consequences. Blinken highlighted the real-life impact of these attacks on people and urged Iran to cease its support for the Houthis to prevent the conflict’s escalation.
While the Secretary of State did not specify the nature of the consequences, the UN Security Council, led by the US, adopted a resolution demanding an end to Houthi attacks. The rebels claim that their attacks are directed at ships affiliated with or heading to Israel to stop them from receiving supplies, expressing solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
In response to Tuesday’s attack, the US Navy intercepted 21 Houthi missiles and drones in what was termed a “complex attack” by US Central Command. The assault included various types of weapons such as one-way attack drones, anti-ship cruise missiles, and an anti-ship ballistic missile. The target was international shipping lanes with dozens of vessels, according to Central Command.
The recent attack is part of a series of 26 attacks by the Houthis targeting commercial ships in the Red Sea since December 9. Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, the commander of Central Command, clarified that most recent attacks are unrelated to Israel. These daily attacks have affected ships with connections to 55 nations. The constant attacks not only pose safety risks to the crew and cargo of these ships, but also threaten the stability of the middle east, as the US has recently begun attacks on the Houthis.
