(ConservativeJournal.org) – Former House Speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is ready to leave Congress, a move distinct from 83-year-old former Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) who is planning to run for reelection in her home district of San Francisco at 83-years-old.
McCarthy himself drew the comparison when asked about his retirement next year in a recent interview with Fox News. Fox host Brian Kilmeade inquired as to why McCarthy was letting Pelosi outlast him in Congress. McCarthy said that he didn’t want to behave similarly to her and just stay around the halls of Congress. McCarthy was first elected in 2006 and is 58-years-old. When discussing Pelosi’s plan to run for reelection, he scoffed at the idea.
McCarthy mocked Pelosi’s claims she is running again to help fix the problems, pointing out she was in office when all the problems were created. McCarthy added that the founders designed our system so that “new blood” could replace older leaders.
Pelosi served as Speaker for two terms from 2007 to 2011 and then again in 2019 up through this past January. She also stepped aside from a leadership role in the Democrat Party such that Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY) is now the minority leader in the House.
McCarthy took over as Speaker in January after a contentious fight among House Republicans. There was a split between conservative Republicans who typically support former President Donald Trump – the House Freedom Caucus – and more traditional establishment Republicans who tend to oppose Trump.
Conservatives have taken to calling moderate establishment Republicans RINOs or Republicans in name only due to their support for spending and the war in Ukraine.
McCarthy lost the Speakership in October when the House Freedom Caucus voted to oust him with Democrat help. After a few weeks of debate, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) was ultimately selected after bids by Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) both failed to acquire enough Republican support.
