(ConservativeJournal.org) – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US issued a warning to CVS, Walgreens, and other pharmaceutical stores, regarding the manufacture of unapproved eye drop products on Tuesday, September 12.
The said eye products that the FDA references are apparently illegally marketed and claim to treat issues such as cataracts, glaucoma, and conjunctivitis. They added in the letters that these illegally marketed drugs are extremely dangerous because they are able to easily get past the natural defenses of the human body. Some of the products also had silver as an ingredient, which on top of the aforementioned health risk, can cause parts of the body to permanently turn blue.
Walgreens and CVS have indicated that due to the letters they are stopping the sale of the eye drop products immediately. Both stores are also offering full refunds to any customers who purchased said eye drops.
The FDA also contacted the Swiss pharmaceutical company Similasan, which makes many of the medications that are supplied to retail pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens. They asked Similasan to adjust the ingredients of the medicines they make. Similasan did not yet respond to comment on the situation.
All the companies involved have 15 days for the response or for the official acknowledgment of the letters sent to them, and not just by taking the medications off the shelves. They also must explain in the response letters how they are going to rectify the situation regarding faulty medications.
If any of the companies involved fail to respond officially to the letters or fail to correct the ingredients and sale of the illegally marketed items, the FDA is allowed to move forward with a court order to sue them for non-compliance. As Walgreens and CVS are very popular retail pharmacies in the US, a legal lawsuit might lower public trust in these companies.
