(ConservativeJournal.org) – Voting is one of the most amazing rights we have as US citizens. It is one of the only ways to make our voices heard and keeps us involved in the political process. That’s exactly why you should never take this right for granted. It’s essential that you register to vote in your state and exercise your right to do so in every election.
States Dictate Voter Registration Requirements
Voting may seem like a federal process, but it is actually up to the states to set the rules for voter registration. According to USA.gov, almost every state requires you to register to vote before election day. North Dakota is the only exception to this rule.
States also set deadlines for registration individually. If you fail to register by the correct date, you may find yourself unable to vote in the next election. You can find out about your state’s voting laws from your local or state election office.
Make Sure You Are Eligible
People often think of voting as an inalienable right. This belief isn’t exactly true, as there is no such amendment within the Constitution. Specific passages, including the 15th Amendment, prevent the government from refusing to allow citizens to vote based on unalterable characteristics, such as race or color.
Individual states can restrict who can vote based on other specific characteristics. In Alabama and Arizona, individuals with a felony conviction may not vote until they fully complete their sentence — including parole or probation.
In all states, you must be a US citizen. You must also be at least 18 years old at the time you cast your ballot. However, a handful of states allow you to register to vote at 17, especially if you will be 18 by the time of the next election.
When you register to vote, you will usually have to show a photo ID and some kind of proof of residency. As North Dakota does not follow a specific registration process, you can simply bring these documents with you when you vote.
Multiple Ways to Register
You may be able to register to vote online at Vote.gov. This tool is valid in 40 states and Washington D.C. You may also register by mail using the National Mail Voter Registration Form. Finally, you can handle the process in person at your local or state election office.
Some states also make voter registration available at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), certain public assistance offices, or military recruitment centers.
Vote in All Elections
Once you register to vote, you can and should exercise your right to vote in every election. Presidential elections may get the most attention, but be sure to cast your ballot during midterm, state and local elections, too — they’re every bit as important.
Midterm elections allow you to vote for representatives and senators who serve in Congress. They also empower you to vote on local and state issues and the election of both local and state officials.
Remember, you have a voice in how the government runs. By voting in each primary and general election, you have a say in the future of this great country. The general election is always held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Primary elections, on the other hand, are scheduled at the state level.
